Put yourself in the shoes of Google. They have a brand to maintain; a promise of great search results. The algorithm they’ve built and constantly tweak studies all websites out there, crawling the pages to look at the content on them. It has a methodology that looks for particular things, then stores that information for future search presentation.
The key to getting Google to rank your website higher is to build your content writing in the way the search engine wants it.
What they want is to present the best content possible for the users of Google on a phrase-by-phrase basis. And I genuinely believe the algorithm does a very good job of understanding what a great website is (with one exception which we’ll discuss further down this page). This is a list of what you must do to achieve a better ranking on each and every phrase you’re chasing:
- Study your competitors on each and every key phrase you’re after so you know what will be required to beat them
- Dedicate particular pages you build to one specific key phrase
- Don’t try to cram other key phrases onto that page. Each page should be dedicated to just one key phrase
- Use the key phrase in the first part of your headline on that page
- Make sure your URLs show up in “canonical” fashion
- Write more than one page about that key phrase
- Remember that Google studies single pages on your website and ranks both your overall domain and specific pages. So write these pages with a key phrase density of about 3% – 4%. Also, include the phrase in some of the subheads
- Google looks at how many other websites think your pages about that particular key phrase are valuable. It measures this based on whether or not they’ve pointed a link at your page
- The links that point at your keyphrase driven pages will be of far higher search value if they, too, talk about the same key phrase
- THE REALLY IMPORTANT ONE - You cannot cheat this system and win over the long haul. You must build a website that really adds value in your category. Build something for the long haul. Build a lasting resource. Make your online brand as valuable as your off-line brand with content that’s useful to your audience.

The thing Google is still getting wrong in assessing websites for ranking
This chart shows the elements on a website that determine it’s ranking by Google. The problem is that outside linking has, for a very long time, played far too important of a role.
This is changing quickly because a report came out indicating that users of Bing had a lower bounce rate on the pages they visited after a search on that engine. You can imagine how that shook up the folks at Google. As time goes by, we believe that Google continue to find better ways to assess the value of links, and they’ll raise the importance of high-value links over “link farms.”
